Bumps and dark spots after bikini hair removal: what helps
Share
Bumps and dark spots along the bikini line usually come from razor irritation and ingrown hairs. The hair here is coarse and curly, so it grows back into the skin more easily. Gentle hair removal and regular, careful exfoliation of the outer skin prevent most bumps.
Why bumps happen
- Coarse, curly hair that curls back into the skin
- Shaving against the grain or with a blunt blade
- Tight clothing straight after hair removal
- Dead skin trapping new hairs
Gentle hair removal
- Use a clean, sharp razor with gel; never shave dry.
- Shave in the direction of hair growth.
- Trimming instead of shaving close causes fewer bumps.
- Wear loose cotton afterwards.
Prevent ingrown hairs
- Wait at least 48 hours after hair removal.
- Then, on the outer skin only, wipe a little 5% Glycolic Acid Toner with a cotton pad, 2 nights a week.
- Moisturise with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion.
Exfoliating between hair removal sessions helps hairs grow out freely, and helps leftover dark spots look lighter over 4 to 8 weeks.
Don'ts
- Don't pick or squeeze ingrown hairs.
- Don't use glycolic acid on broken skin or intimate areas.
- Stop if it stings or itches.
If a bump is painful, red, warm or filled with pus, see a doctor.
