Can deodorant cause dark underarms? Sweat, friction and what to change

Deodorant on its own rarely causes dark underarms, but products that irritate the skin, especially when applied on freshly shaved skin, can add to darkening over time. Sweat and friction in hot weather make it worse. A few simple changes help.

How deodorant can play a part

  • Irritation: strong fragrance or alcohol can sting sensitive or freshly shaved skin.
  • Build-up: product that isn't washed off sits in the skin folds.
  • Applying on broken skin after shaving.

Sweat and friction

Sweat trapped under tight clothes, plus constant rubbing, irritates the skin. Over months, irritation can leave darker patches.

What to change

  • Choose a gentle, fragrance-light deodorant and patch test new ones.
  • Apply it only on clean, dry skin, and not right after shaving.
  • Wash underarms every night to remove product and sweat.
  • Wear breathable cotton and change sweaty clothes quickly.

Add gentle exfoliation

At night, after washing, spray the 5% Glycolic Acid Toner on dry underarms, 2 to 3 nights a week to start. It removes dead skin and build-up so the area looks lighter and smoother over 4 to 8 weeks. Use deodorant in the morning, not on the same skin straight after glycolic acid.

When to see a doctor

If there is a rash, itching that doesn't settle, or thick, velvety darkening, see a doctor.

Roman Urdu

Deodorant akela aam tor par kaala pan nahi karta, lekin shave ke foran baad lagane se jalan aur dheere dheere daag ho sakte hain. Raat ko underarms dhoyein, cotton pehnein, aur raat ko glycolic toner, subah deodorant lagayein.
