Dark inner thighs from friction: causes and how to help

Inner thighs often look darker because of friction: skin rubbing on skin while walking, especially in heat and with sweat. Reducing chafing is the first step; gentle exfoliation then helps the skin look smoother and more even over time.

Why friction darkens skin

Constant rubbing irritates the skin. Irritated skin protects itself by making more pigment and thickening slightly, so the area looks darker and rougher.

Reduce friction

  • Wear cycling shorts or slip shorts under dresses, shalwar or skirts in summer.
  • Choose breathable cotton and the right size of clothing.
  • Keep the area dry; change out of sweaty clothes quickly.
  • An anti-chafing balm or a little powder on long walking days helps.

Gentle exfoliation

  1. On clean, completely dry skin at night, wipe a little 5% Glycolic Acid Toner on the inner thighs with a cotton pad.
  2. Start 2 nights a week.
  3. Follow with a fragrance-free moisturiser.
  4. Skip it on chafed, raw or freshly shaved skin.

What to expect

Smoother skin in 2 to 4 weeks; a more even look in 6 to 8 weeks if friction is also reduced.

When to see a doctor

If you see a rash, itching, peeling at the edges, or thick, velvety darkening, see a doctor. Fungal infections are common in hot weather and need proper treatment.
