Dark knuckles: causes and how to make them look lighter
Share
Dark knuckles are very common, especially on South Asian skin. The skin over the joints folds and stretches all day, gets dry, builds up dead skin and is exposed to the sun and household work. Gentle exfoliation, moisture and sunscreen help knuckles look more even.
Causes
- Dry, folding skin over the joints
- Dead skin build-up in the creases
- Sun exposure on the hands
- Detergents, dishwashing and cleaning
- Genetics
Routine
- At night, wash and dry your hands.
- Spray the 5% Glycolic Acid Toner onto the knuckles and pat in.
- Start every other night.
- Apply a rich hand cream.
- In the day, use sunscreen on the backs of your hands, such as Sheer Defence SPF 60.
What to expect
Softer knuckles in 2 weeks; a more even look in 4 to 8 weeks, as long as the hands are protected from sun and harsh detergents.
Tips
- Wear gloves for washing dishes and cleaning.
- Moisturise after every hand wash if possible.
