Glycolic acid toner before and after: face, hands, knuckles and legs

Glycolic acid is one of the most popular ingredients for dull skin, dark spots and dark knuckles, and "glycolic acid before and after" is one of the most searched questions about it. Here is what results really look like, week by week, and how to get them without irritating your skin.

What glycolic acid does

Glycolic acid is an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid). It loosens the dead skin cells sitting on the surface so fresher skin shows through. Over time that means smoother texture, a brighter and more even tone, and lighter-looking dark spots and acne marks. On the body, it softens rough, darker patches on knuckles, elbows, knees and underarms.

Before and after on the face

  • Weeks 1 to 2: skin feels smoother and looks less dull. A light tingle when applying is normal.
  • Weeks 4 to 6: tone looks more even and brighter; makeup sits better.
  • 8 weeks and more: dark spots and acne marks look lighter, as long as you wear sunscreen every day.

Before and after on hands, knuckles, elbows and legs

Body skin is thicker, so it can usually handle nightly use sooner. Dark knuckles, elbows and knees typically look smoother and more even after 4 to 8 weeks of nightly use. Hands and legs are exposed to the sun all day, so cover up or use sunscreen there too, or the darkness will come back.

How to use a 5% glycolic acid toner

  1. Use at night on clean, dry skin.
  2. Face: spray onto a cotton pad and wipe gently, avoiding eyes and lips.
  3. Body: spray directly onto knuckles, elbows, knees or underarms and pat in.
  4. Start 2 to 3 nights a week, then increase to nightly if your skin is comfortable.
  5. Follow with moisturiser. Wear sunscreen every morning.

Mistakes that ruin your results

  • Skipping sunscreen: acids make skin more sensitive to the sun, and unprotected sun undoes your progress.
  • Using too much, too soon: stinging, redness and peeling mean you need to slow down.
  • Mixing strong actives on the same night: don't layer glycolic acid with retinol or salicylic acid; alternate nights instead.
  • Giving up after a week: dark spots need at least 6 to 8 weeks.

Take your own before and after photos

Take a photo in the same spot, with the same light, before you start. Repeat every 2 weeks. Changes are slow day to day, but side-by-side photos show the difference clearly.
