Salicylic acid vs niacinamide for acne: which should you use?

Salicylic acid and niacinamide are the two most popular acne ingredients, and people often ask which one to buy. The honest answer: they do different jobs, and many people with acne-prone skin do best with both.

What salicylic acid does

Salicylic acid is a BHA (beta hydroxy acid). Unlike most acids, it is oil-soluble, so it gets inside the pore and dissolves the oil and dead skin that block it. That makes it the go-to ingredient for:

  • Active pimples and whiteheads
  • Blackheads, especially on the nose and chin
  • Bumpy, congested texture

A 2% concentration is the standard effective strength. Try our Acne Control Treatment with 2% Salicylic Acid or the Tea Tree Anti Acne Gel Face Wash, which also contains salicylic acid.

What niacinamide does

Niacinamide is vitamin B3. It does not unclog pores directly, but it:

  • Controls excess oil and shine
  • Makes open pores look smaller
  • Calms redness
  • Helps fade acne marks over time
  • Strengthens the skin barrier, so skin is less irritated

Our Pore Minimizer Serum combines 10% niacinamide with 1% zinc for oily, acne-prone skin.

Which one do you need?

  • Mostly pimples, whiteheads and blackheads: start with salicylic acid.
  • Mostly oiliness, open pores, redness or acne marks: start with niacinamide.
  • Both: use both, in different parts of the day.

How to use them together

The simplest approach: niacinamide in the morning, salicylic acid at night.

  1. Morning: cleanse, niacinamide serum, oil-free moisturiser, sunscreen.
  2. Night: cleanse, salicylic acid serum, moisturiser.

Start salicylic acid 3 nights a week and increase as your skin gets used to it. If you feel dryness or stinging, cut back. Always use sunscreen during the day, because acne treatments can make marks darker in the sun.

When to expect results

Oil control from niacinamide is often noticeable within 2 weeks. Clearer pores and fewer breakouts usually take 4 to 8 weeks. Stick with it before switching products.
