Should you pop whiteheads? What to do instead

It is better not to pop whiteheads. Squeezing pushes some of the oil and bacteria deeper, can tear the skin, and often leaves red or dark marks that take weeks or months to fade. Clearing the pore gently with salicylic acid works better and leaves no damage.

Why popping makes things worse

  • Deeper inflammation: pressure can push the contents of the pore into the surrounding skin.
  • Dark marks: irritated skin often leaves brown marks, especially on South Asian skin.
  • Infection and scars: nails and unclean tools can cause infection and, sometimes, permanent scars.
  • Bigger-looking pores: repeated squeezing can stretch the pore.

What to do instead

  1. Leave it alone and keep your hands off it.
  2. Cleanse gently morning and night.
  3. Apply the Acne Treatment Serum (2% salicylic acid) at night. It loosens the plug inside the pore so the whitehead can clear on its own.
  4. Moisturise, and wear sunscreen every morning.

Already popped it?

  • Clean the area gently and don't pick at it again.
  • Let it heal before using strong actives on that spot.
  • Once healed, salicylic acid with azelaic acid and daily sunscreen help the look of any dark mark fade. Read: Acne marks vs acne scars.

When to see a dermatologist

If you have many painful bumps, deep cysts or scarring, a dermatologist can treat them safely.

Roman Urdu

Whiteheads ko dabana theek nahi. Is se daag, infection aur bade pores ho sakte hain. Inhein chhor dein aur raat ko 2% salicylic acid serum lagayein; daana khud saaf ho jata hai. Din mein sunscreen zaroor lagayein taake daag na bane.
