Closed comedones on forehead: why they happen and how to clear them

The forehead is the most common place for closed comedones. It is oily, it sweats, and it is constantly in contact with hair, hair oil, caps and scarves. Clearing forehead bumps means treating the pores with salicylic acid and removing what keeps clogging them.

Why the forehead?

  • Hair oil: oiling hair (champi) is great for hair, but oil that runs onto the forehead clogs pores.
  • Hair products: gels, serums and creams near the hairline.
  • Fringes and bangs resting on the skin.
  • Caps, helmets, scarves, dupattas and hijabs that trap heat and sweat.
  • Oily T-zone in hot, humid weather.

How to clear them

  1. Wash your face morning and night, and after sweating.
  2. At night, apply the Acne Treatment Serum (2% salicylic acid) across the forehead. Start 2 to 3 nights a week.
  3. Use a light, oil-free moisturiser.
  4. Wear sunscreen in the day.

Simple habit changes

  • When you oil your hair, keep it off the hairline, and wash your face afterwards.
  • Wash hair oil out properly with shampoo.
  • Wash caps, scarves and pillowcases often.
  • Keep fringes off the forehead at night.

What to expect

Forehead bumps usually start to smooth out in 3 to 4 weeks, with a clear difference after 6 to 8 weeks of regular use. Stick with it; stopping too early lets the bumps come back.

If the bumps are itchy and appear in groups after sweating, they may be fungal acne rather than closed comedones. A dermatologist can tell the difference.
