Why are eye bags worse in the morning?
Share
Eye bags are often worst in the morning because fluid collects under the eyes while you lie flat for hours. Once you are upright and moving, the fluid drains and the bags shrink by late morning. The good news: this kind of bag responds well to simple changes.
Why it happens overnight
- Lying flat: fluid settles in the soft tissue under the eyes.
- Salty dinner or late snacks: the body holds more water.
- Too little or too much sleep.
- Allergies: dust, pollen and pets cause swelling and itching.
- Crying before bed.
- Sleeping face-down on the pillow.
At night
- Eat lighter and less salty in the evening; drink water through the day.
- Sleep on your back with an extra pillow.
- Tap a rice-grain amount of Jaago Coffee Dark Circle Serum under both eyes.
- Wash pillowcases often if you have allergies.
In the morning
- Cold compress, chilled spoon or cold tea bags for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Gentle tapping from the inner corner outwards.
- A tiny amount of Jaago, then Sheer Defence SPF 60 around the eyes.
What to expect
Many people see calmer mornings within a week of less salt and a raised pillow, and fresher-looking under-eyes after 2 to 4 weeks of nightly care.
See a doctor if morning swelling is new and severe, doesn't go down during the day, or comes with swelling in the feet or ankles.
