Salicylic acid for blackheads: how it works and how to use it

Salicylic acid is the most widely used ingredient for blackheads because it dissolves in oil. Most exfoliants work only on the surface of the skin, but salicylic acid can move into the oily pore and loosen the plug of oil and dead skin that turns into a blackhead.

How salicylic acid works on blackheads

  • Oil-soluble: it gets inside the pore, where blackheads actually form.
  • Exfoliates inside the pore: it loosens dead skin so the plug can clear.
  • Prevents new ones: with regular use, pores clog less often.

What strength should you use?

2% is the most common strength for blackhead-prone skin and is gentle enough for regular use. Higher is not always better, especially in hot weather when skin is easily irritated.

How to use a 2% salicylic acid serum

  1. Cleanse with a gentle gel face wash.
  2. At night, apply a few drops of the Acne Treatment Serum (2% salicylic acid + azelaic acid) to blackhead areas such as the nose, chin and forehead.
  3. Start 2 to 3 nights a week. Increase to nightly if your skin feels comfortable.
  4. Follow with a light moisturiser.
  5. Use sunscreen every morning.

Can you use it with other products?

  • Niacinamide: yes. Many people use the Pore Minimizer Serum in the morning and salicylic acid at night.
  • Glycolic acid or retinol: not on the same night. Alternate nights to avoid irritation.

Signs to slow down

A light tingle is normal. If your skin stings, peels or turns red, use it less often and moisturise more. Stop if irritation continues.

What to expect

Skin feels less oily in 1 to 2 weeks, blackheads look fewer in 3 to 4 weeks, and pores look clearer after 6 to 8 weeks of regular use.
